How come after securing wireless internet i get bad connection?

So i recently changed my wireless connection from no security to WPA2 Personal. I use it for both my ipod touch and my laptop. I noticed recently when i put in the pword on my ipod that the connection was only one bar, very low. I'm sitting 3 feet away from my router and modem. So should i just leave it unsecured?
